The author studied on the distribution of the depth and temperature of isothermal stratum in Japan and Manchuria, He observed that the depth and temperature of isothermal stratum are generally the function of latitude, and then its depth is shallower and its temperature is lower in high latitude than in low latitude. Its depth is 10-16 m in Japan and is 10-14 m in Manchuria. Its temperature is 8-18°C in Japan and is 2-11°C in Manchuria.The reason of this phenomenon is thought to be due to the freezing at the surface stratum of the earth in winter. But there are several regions, where the temperatures are disturbed by the covering plant, the nature of soil and the moisture content.The temperature of isothermal. stratum is very important in the geophysical point of view. It will give a key to the study in fault, earth current and geomagnetism. Moreover it will have a significance in the agrar-climate, which the author will complete as “Studies on thermal change in a soil column upper isothermal stratum” on the following treatise.
