Of 60 strains of Pseudomonas fluorescens tested in vitro on KB-agar and as soil drench in Humosoil : sand mix infested with an isolate of Rhizoctonia solani AG-4, 25 provided moderately good protection of bean seedlings against damping-off and root rot, but only fairly moderate or a poor disease control in cucumber. Of 11 fungicides tested as seed treatment, azoxystrobin, fludioxonil and tebuconazole at 25 mg a. i./kg and iprodione at 1 g a. i./kg gave > 90 % disease control in cucumber; tebuconazole (50-100 mg/kg) and tolclofos-methyl ( 1 g/kg) gave ≥ 90 % disease control in bean. Lower rates of azoxystrobin, fludioxonil, pencycuron and tebuconazole applied as seed treatment in combinations with soil drenches of resistance-inducing chemicals (5-nitrosalicylic acid, o-acetylsalicylic acid, 2-aminoisobutyric acid, lichenin) or with P. fluorescens strain W36 did not result in any significant improvement in disease control in bean and cucumber; most of these combinations showed antagonistic interaction. Probable mechanisms and implications of disease control by P. fluorescens strains, fungicides and their combined treatments with resistance-inducing chemicals are discussed, along with critical assessment of the relative efficacy of the different options for disease control in bean and cucumber.
