MATERIALS AND METHODSWeanling male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into two groups on arrival and 2 days later one of these groups was placed on a 4-h daily feeding schedule (from 8: 00 PM to midnight), while the other group was allowed continuous access to food. After 4 days on this regimen all the animals were weighed and their body lengths were measured. A number of rats from each group was subjected to electrolytic destruction of the ventromedial hypothalamic nuclei (lesion), while in the remainder the electrode was inserted into the VMN without current flow (sham). The lesions were placed as previously described (8). Subsequent to the lesion placement, all the animals were maintained on their respective preoperative feeding schedules. Twelve days later all the animals were again weighed and measured. Two days later food was removed from the cages of all the animals 12 h before sacrifice.Mature rats weighing 140-l 60 g were weighed and measured and subjected to either VMN destruction or sham operations. All the sham-operated rats in this study were fed ad libitum throughout, whereas the rats with destructive lesions were divided into two groups, one of which was fed ad libitum and the other of which was pair fed on a daily basis with the sham-lesioned group. Twelve days later the rats were again weighed and measured and 2 days later they were sacrificed. The ad libitum-fed rats had food available until the time of sacrifice.
