Maternal cardiac disease complicates up to 4% of pregnancies and is the leading cause of pregnancy related mortality in the Unites States. 1, 2 Care of pregnant patients with cardiovascular (CV) disease is best performed with a multidisciplinary team, referred to as the Pregnancy Heart Team. The Pregnancy Heart Team typically consists of maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) specialists, cardiologists, obstetric anesthesiologists, and neonatologists. For patients with severe cardiac disease, additional specialists such as intensivists, cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiothoracic anesthesiologists, obstetric and critical care nurses, and others may need to be involved. The Pregnancy Heart Team evaluates cardio-obstetric patients and devises a comprehensive plan to manage the cardiovascular disease during pregnancy, delivery, and the postpartum period. The design of the Pregnancy Heart Team facilitates multidisciplinary coordination and communication. The cardiothoracic (CT) anesthesiologist may be called to participate in the care of patients with severe cardiac lesions for cardiac procedures during pregnancy or to assist in hemodynamic management during delivery. A strong partnership between cardiothoracic and obstetric anesthesiologists will allow for comprehensive, optimal specialty specific care.
