The Kanaganahalli Stupa is part of a ruined Buddhist establishment on the banks of the river Bhima in northern Karnataka. It was excavated from 1993 to 2001. Nearby archaeological sites have been findspots of Aśokan edicts and Sātavāhana inscriptions. The shape of thestupaand the nature of its decor are similar to those found in Andhra, like the Amaravati Stupa. However, the uniformity of sculptural decor at the Kanaganahalli Stupa is unique. Although the structure is probably older by at least a century, the reliefs can be dated to between the first centurybceand the third centuryce. A number of inscriptions mention the ruler and the regnal year during which certain carvings were added to thestupa. These rulers all belong to the Sātavāhana Dynasty which at the time controlled various territories in India. The sculptural decor consists mainly of reliefs carved into limestone panels covering the dome of thestupaand the drum beneath it. Themes taken on by the sculptors of the dome panels are primarilyjātakas, events from the life of the Buddha and representations of Sātavāhana kings. The drum panels included, among others, representations of important Buddhist sites. Apart from Buddha statues, which were added to thestupawhen it was almost finished, and a few later carvings, the image of the Buddha was absent. Representatives of at least two Buddhist schools have left their mark at the site.
