Plasmodium vivax infections cause significant morbidity. In addition to the primary infection, dormant liver stages may reemerge, long after treatment, to cause relapse. Primaquine, the only drug available for the'radical cure'(ie eradication of the hepatic hypnozoites to prevent relapse) of P. vivax (and P. ovale) infections, has been used successfully for many decades (Collins and Jeffery, 1996).
