MATERIALS AND METHODSTwelve adult mongrel dogs, weighing 15-25 kg, were anesthetized with a warmed mixture of chloralose (70 mg/kg) and urethan (250 mg/kg). Respiration was maintained by a positive-pressure respirator(Harvard) through a cuffed endotracheal tube utilizing oxygenenriched room air. A median sternotomy was performed and, following the administration of heparin (4 “g/kg), a standard right-heart bypass procedure was initiated as described below. Additional doses of the chloraloseurethan mixture and heparin were administered as needed to maintain adequate levels of anesthesia and anticoagulation. The azygos vein was ligated and ligatures placed about the main pulmonary artery and the extrapericardial portions of each cava. The cavae were individually cannulated through a right atriotomy, and a cannula secured in the main pulmonary artery following placement through a stab wound in the right ventricle. Venous return, collected in a reservoir via gravity drainage, was returned through a heat exchanger to the main pulmonary artery by a calibrated roller pump (Sarnes). Coronary effluent was led to the same reservoir by gravity from a sump line inserted through a second stab wound in the right ventricle.
