From their hybrid properties, the reaction centres of green sulphur bacteria and heliobacteria seem to be the missing links between the two branches of the reaction centre family, typified by higher plant photosystem I and the purple bacterial reaction centre. This suggests that all of the diverse types of photosynthetic reaction centres have closer structura l resemblances than was previously thought.
