The following paper evaluates the hypothesis that so called wh-exclamatives in German are of the same semantical type as wh-interrogatives. W.r.t. embedded clauses, two main questions are discussed: (i) Why can certain wh-clauses not be embedded under predicates like to wonder' but under predicates like to be amazed', for instance wh-clauses with an intensifying element like very' inside the clause initial wh-phrase? (ii) Why can ob/whether-clauses not be embedded under exclamative predicates? Regarding root wh-clauses, it is claimed that exclaiming is one way to use a wh-clause. The distinguishing factor w.r.t. the use as a question is the obligatory exclamative accent.
