Brain-body weight relationships were calculated from 113 fish species from Hawaiian tropical waters. The mean coefficient of allometry is: intraspecific 0.44, intrafamilial 0.50 and interspecific 0.657. The encephalization indices give a mean of 106 (contrasted with a Reunion Island value of 123 and a European value of 93), due to the low value of preacanthopterygian fishes (37, many eels) and the high value of acanthopterygians: 118 Reunion: 125 and Europe: 103. Acanthopterygian fishes with low encephalization indices (Scorpaeniformes, Pleuronectiformes, Tetraodontidae and Diodontidae) use various devices to avoid predators; the other coral reef fishes with a high level of encephalization, may be correlated with finding shelter in coral crevices, color vision, social behavior and locomotion.
