Dorsal neck muscles are partially subdivided by tendinous inscriptions and receive their innervation from as many as four spinal segments (27). This morphology presents an interesting opportunity for study of the input from spindle primary (Ia) afferents to the motoneurons innervating these muscles. Two very different patterns of organization of this input have been proposed. Spindles whose afferents enter the spinal cord at a particular segmental level have a localized distribution within the muscle (29) and neck muscles may be good examples of compartmentalized function: Ia-afferents from spindles in a specific region project only onto motoneurons innervating that region (7, 30). Conversely, as in the hindlimb segments, each Ia-afferent may project to most of the muscle’s motoneurons (22, 23, 33) and, as suggested by Rapoport (25, 26), each motoneuron may therefore sum Ia input from several of the segments that innervate the muscle. The purpose of our experiments was to distinguish between these alternatives. Some of these results have been presented in abstract form (8).
