Dr. Miller, Dr. Sacks, members of the Chicago Ophthalmological Society: I am grateful for the invitation to deliver this 29th annual Sanford Gifford Memorial Lecture, and it was certainly a pleasure to be introduced in such a kind way via a tape recording by an absent David Shoch. It was in 1938 that I started working in ophthalmology, and soon thereafter that I had the good fortune several times to meet Sandy Gifford. He was a close friend of my chief, Fred Cordes, and on at least one occasion spent a summer holiday with Cordes at the Bohemian Grove. I found him to be kind, warm, and constantly interested in sifting information in the fields of biology and medicine. This is a most welcome opportunity to salute his memory.Endothelial dystrophies of the cornea are classified as primary or secondary. The primary dystrophies can be congenital, acquired, or associated with cornea1 stromal dystrophies.
