The Christmas ritual is the largest consumption period of the year, but few researchers have attempted to understand the meanings of Christmas via holistic study. This paper uses an ethnographic approach to identify six dimensions of the Christmas ritual: (1) Spirit of Christmas, (2) Religion, (3) Santa Claus, (4) Family, (5) Gifts, (6) Decorations. Thick description through presentation of quoted verbal reports and observation of behavior is presented. Based on an interpretation of these data, it may be concluded that emotions are the most important dimensions of Christmas. Implications and suggestions for future research are offered.
