For the past ˜2 billion years, a small group of microorganisms, Eubacteria and Archaea, free‐living, as symbionts, or in some cases in intracellular associations with eukaryotic hosts, has provided the biological world with fixed nitrogen. A single family of metalloproteins, nitrogenases, has evolved to catalyze the reduction of N2to ammonia at ambient temperature and pressure. This chapter presents a look at the global distribution of the nitrogen‐fixing species and at their ecological niches.
