he color patterns which often characterize the skin of vertebrates T have been the object of a number of investigations designed to analyze the developmental mechanisms responsible for their formation. Coloration may be produced in a number of ways, but in the majority of cases melanin pigment is the primary color constituent. Granules of melanin pigment are synthesized by special chromatophores, which typically reside in the epidermis and its structural derivatives but may also occur in the derma of the skin and in the coelomic epithelium. The source of melanophores and the factors governing their function and distribution have long been problems of considerable biological interest. A wide variety of histological observations, involving embryonic and adult tissues of every class of vertebrates, have been brought to bear upon the general problem of melanophore origin.
