Data concerning 360 patients with multiple sclerosis, examined over a period of seventeen years, are presented. The sample included more women than men, and the median age at onset of the illness was 29 for both groups. There were significantly more patients in the Registrar General's social classes I and II, holding professional and managerial jobs, than would be expected on the basis of population statistics. A significant sex difference as regards the site of the first diagnosed lesion was found.
