The article discusses forgiving as a concept in the context of Hannah Arendt's definition of forgiveness between individual persons and its implications towards forgiveness between and amongst collectives or institution. Arendt define the faculty of forgiving as the ability to redeem another from the inability to undo the wrong done in the past which is a philosophy she reflected in the connection between forgiving and promising. The author presents Arendt's argument on the imparity of collectives being forgiven, first, there is no such thing as collective moral guilt, individual wrongdoing should not be taken in such a way as to prejudice the collective and to collectively admit guilt is to exculpate those who are really guilty.
