ABSTRACT Most current applications of digital human figure modelsfor ergonomic assessments of manual tasks focus onthe analysis of a static posture. Tools available for staticanalysis include joint-specific strength, calculation ofjoint moments, balance maintenance capability, and low-back compression or shear force estimates. Yet, formany tasks, the inertial loads due to acceleration of bodysegments or external objects may contribute significantlyto internal body forces and tissue stresses. Due to thecomplexity of incorporating the dynamics of motion intoanalysis, most commercial software packages used forergonomic assessment do not have the capacity toinclude dynamic effects. Thus, commercial humanmodeling packages rarely provide an opportunity for theuser to determine if a static analysis is sufficient. Thegoal of this paper is to quantify the differences betweena static and dynamic analysis of a materials handlingtask using the AnyBody modeling system to include theeffects of motion. The feasibility and tractability ofperforming dynamical ergonomic analysis with theAnyBody model is assessed for the analysis of anasymmetric lifting task. Comparisons between low backmoments, compression and shear forces for dynamicand static analyses are presented.
