ConclusionThe quenching of Ru (bpy) 32+(ads) by coadsorbedCr3+, Fe3+, and Cu2+ occurs by static processes and reflects the distribution of the ions within the glass. Distribution, in turn, reflects the strength of the electrostaticinteraction with the surface and the kinetic lability of theion. With weakly bound, labile ions, the preferred distribution in the presence of coadsorbed Ru (bpy) 32+ is one of uniform surface coverage. Consequently, initially adsorbed ions impregnate vacant volumes of the glass until the surface coverage in these volumes matches that inthe volumes impregnated with Ru (bpy) 32+(ads). At that point, the ions begin to adsorb into the latter volumes, and quenching becomes a function of the moles adsorbed per gram.Acknowledgment.
