ALTERATIONS in catecholamine function in the brain have been observed after acute and chronic treatment of ethanol. Although there is no significant effect on DA and NE levels (BONNYCASTLE et at., 1962; EFRON & GESSA, 1963; DURITZ & TRUIIT, 1966), ethanol appears to induce changes in catecholamine turnover in a biphasic manner. Single doses increase NE turnover shortly after treatment with an elevation or no effect observed on DA turnover (CORRODI et al., 1966; CARLSSON et al., 1973; HUNT & MAJCHROWICZ, 1974; POHORECKY & JAFFE, 1975). Several hours later both NE and DA turnover are depressed
