A major metabolite of daunorubicin from human urine and enzymatic reactions was isolated and characterized. Comparative data from thin-layer chromatography, infrared spectroscopy, mass spectroscopy and chemical derivatization of daunorubicin, adriamycin and the metabolite indicated the metabolite to be the 13-hydroxydaunorubicin, daunorubicinol. The hydrolytic product of daunorubicinol, daunorubicinol aglycone, was a second metabolite.
