In previous publications the author has analyzed in detail the mortality of psychiatric hospital patients in Norway 1926 to 1941. In the present paper data from 1950-1962 are given, analyzed by somewhat less exact methods. It is shown that the decrease in national mortality is followed by a corresponding decrease in the mortality of the hospital population. The excess mortality of the patients have, therefore, remained largely the same. The most notable exception to this rule is the marked decrease in the mortality of male patients 20-29 years of age from the period of 1950-1955 to 1956-1962, a decrease which has no parallel in the female patients, nor in the men of the general population. Among the various causes of death tuberculosis has lost its dominating position in the hospitals as well as in the general population, but the excess mortality of the patients has not decreased. It has been confirmed that cancer mortality is no higher in patients with functional psychoses than in the general population. Mortality from circulatory diseases (heart diseases as well as apoplexy and arteriosclerosis) is only slightly higher in the hospitals, in marked contrast to the high excess mortality of the patients from most other causes, in particular respiratory and infective diseases. Furthermore the excess mortality from circulatory diseases has decreased from 1926-1941 to 1950-1962, because the hospital population has not followed the rising trend which has been evident in the general population. It is suggested that the patients may be relatively protected against circulatory stress by the hospital regime and by their own lack of strong emotional response, since 1954 aided by the neuroleptic drugs.
