Polypropylene, as a model for polyolefins, was irradiated with 60Co-γ-radiation in the presence of various radical scavengers and ion scavengers to determine whether the crosslinking reaction is free radical or ionic in nature. it was found that iodine and compounds having labile hydrogen atoms can inhibit the radiation-induced crosslinking. The nature and relative effectiveness of the inhibitors show, that the crosslinking reaction is a rather slow and thermal free radical reaction. The rate of crosslinking of irradiated polypropylene depends upon the temperature, and at -196°C. it is so slow as to be undetectable.
