the 17 nationally funded founding research resource centers from the participating countries and elected Dr. Barbara Knowles from The Jackson Laboratory to chair the board. Dr. Knowles and four vice chairpersons, one from each of the continents that have repositories, will serve as the governing body. FIMRe members formalized the organization in Bethesda, Maryland, in October 2005. The mission of FIMRe is ‘‘To coordinate resource centers to facilitate worldwide access to mouse resources.’’FIMReÕs goal is to facilitate the use of mouse models of human and animal development and disease for the benefit of researchers around the world. In practice, the purpose of FIMRe will be to coordinate repositories to share more effectively the archiving and distribution of strains of mice as cryopreserved embryos and gametes, ES cell lines, and live breeding stock. The specific goals are to coordinate the archiving of valuable genetically defined mice and ES cell lines in line with global research demand establish consistent and the highest possible quality animal health standards in all resource centers provide genetic verification of the mutations and quality control for genetic background collaborate to ensure rapid distribution of archived strains worldwide and provide resource training to enable researchers to use existing mouse resourcesFIMReÕs overall goal is to ensure availability, assure quality, promote sharing and preservation of genetically defined mice, and disseminate information, affiliated resources, and expertise in their use to the global biomedical research community. Strains held at all the FIMRe resource centers are listed in the International Mouse Strain Resource (IMSR)(http://www. imsr. org), and at their individual web sites.
