6TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON Zebrafish Development and Genetics, held in Madison, Wisconsin from July 29 to August 2, 2004, was a testament to the progress of the zebrafish as a model system. The broad scope and high quality of the research mélange presented at this meeting, and the lively discussion generated by the presentations, showed that the zebrafish has truly arrived as an established developmental and genetic model organism. The meetings have steadily grown in size since the first Zebrafish Development and Genetics Conference held in Cold Spring Harbor in 1994. Approximately 190 abstracts were submitted for that meeting, while this year there were over 640. The zebrafish meeting and the community that it serves have evolved in more important ways, however. This was clearly evident in the level of accomplishment within individual and collaborative research programs on display at this year’s meeting. Earlier meetings included a large amount of reporting on expression patterns of genes, mutant phenotypes, and cloning projects. This meeting saw greater emphasis on the sophisticated functional analysis of genes, disease modeling, and in-depth exploration of basic developmental questions using the unique research tools available in fish. Some of the contributions to these research areas that were reported in Madison are described below. The increased depth and sophistication of zebrafish research has been greatly facilitated by the development and/or application of a wide range of new technologies, many of which were highlighted in Madison. Some of the presentations on these technological advances are also discussed below. Perhaps the most important “technological” advance reported in Madison is the ongoing work on the zebrafish genome project. Jane Rogers (Sanger Center) described the strategy and the status of the sequencing project. She announced the recent release of the 4th assembly with 332,729 ESTs mapped, 4,358 cDNAs mapped (57% of 7,689 available), and approximately 8,300 of 33,074 markers uniquely mapped. They expect to have the final assembly completed in 2005. As progress is made in the sequencing project, the ability to access the genome is important.
