Eighty-six teeth were extracted from sevenMacaca rhesusmonkeys. Individual teeth, as well as several adjacent teeth, were removed providing specimens from one week up to one year after extraction.Clinical photographs and histologic specimens showed that the resorption of the edentulous ridge occurred more rapidly at the crest of the buccal alveolar plate resulting, after eight weeks, in residual ridges with crests located lingually and palatally as well as apically in relation to their original position. Thus, the length of the residual ridge when measured along the crest is considerably reduced in comparison with the original length. The muscle attachments located along the external bony walls of the socket at several regions of the jawsseemedto limit the level of resorption of the alveolar crest in an apical direction.
