Oxidation behavior of vapor-grown carbon fiber (VGCF), which is similar to multi-walled carbon nanotube, was investigated within the temperature range of 550–850 °C with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetry (TG) under dry air atmosphere. XPS measurements revealed the presence of highly oxidized species on the fiber surfaces oxidized at 550 and 650 °C. The corroded changes in the morphologies of the oxidized fiber surfaces were observed with SEM. The apparent activation energy for the oxidation of the fiber was calculated to 149 kJ/mol, using the oxidation rates obtained by TG analysis. The oxidation was the range controlled by surface reaction.
