Comparative permeability to water, and 2 solutes, i.e., ethylene glycol and glycerol, was investigated with the unfertilized egg cells of 3 marine invertebrates, the annelid C. pergamantaceus; the mollusc, C. tellenoides, and the echinoderm, A. punctulata. Permeability to water was found to avg. 0.44 for Chaetopterus, 0.46 for Cumingia and 0.12 for Arbacia. These values express the number of cubic [mu] of water entering the cell per min., per square [mu]. of surface, per atmosphere difference in osmotic pressure, during endosmosis in hypo-tonic sea water at 225[degree]C. Permeability to ethylene glycol averages 14.3 for Chaetopterus, 15.6 for Cumingia, and 3.5 for Arbacia. These values express the number of mols X 10-15 of ethylene glycol which enter through each square u of cell surface per min. at a conc. difference of 1 mol per liter and a temp. of 22.5[degree]. For the slowly penetrating solute glycerol, values of permeability for Chaetopterus have averaged 6.2, but for Arbacia only 0.03; while the values obtained for Arbacia are not entirely satisfactory they indicate the order of magnitude, and are in sharp contrast to the surprisingly high values for Chaetopterus. These differences in permeability are not correlated with the size of the cells, which differs greatly in the 3 types of eggs.Comparative permeability to water, and 2 solutes, i.e., ethylene glycol and glycerol, was investigated with the unfertilized egg cells of 3 marine invertebrates, the annelid C. pergamantaceus; the mollusc, C. tellenoides, and the echinoderm, A. punctulata.
