The article analyzes the effect of differential failure on expectation of success, reported anxiety, and response uncertainty. The present investigation is concerned with the extent to which the amount of failure at a problem-solving task influences a person's expectation of success at the task, the degree of anxiety about failure which he reports experiencing, and the extent to which he searches for alternative solutions to the problem. In the situation to be described S works for a fixed number of trials at a task which is presented as an important problem to be solved. The task permits a variety of possible solutions. On each trial S decides on his response, states whether he expects this response to be correct or incorrect, and then gives his response. E then informs S whether his response is correct or incorrect. The primary interest of the present study is, however, in the investigation of the effects of differential failure on anxiety about failure as reported by Ss and on their problem-solving approach as evidenced by response uncertainty.
