Three infants born in Canada of Haitian mothers were found to have acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). One infant developed progressive pneumonia and pericardial effusion which failed to respond to antibiotics. There was marked immunodeficiency with a severe drop in numbers of T cells. The infant died and autopsy showed disseminated cytomegalovirus andPneumocystis cariniipneumonia. The mother of this infant developed lymphoma and miliary tuberculosis a few days after delivery and died 6 weeks later. The other 2 Haitian infants with presumed AIDS are still living. This is the second report of perinatal or congenital AIDS in infants. [See abstract above.]G.W. Csonka
