Fed rats given ethanol orally (2.3 g/kg body wt) had lower blood alcohol concentrations (BAC) than fasted rats and BAC were also lower in rats drinking a 6% ethanol solution and eating solid food than in rats drinking a similar amount of ethanol in a liquid diet; the reasons for these differences were investigated. Less than 40% of the administered ethanol was released from stomachs isolated from fed rats and the rates of ethanol diffusion were slower compared with stomachs from fasted rats, which were devoid of food particles. The unreleased ethanol could be recovered, indicating that neither the stomach nor its contents metabolized ethanol. Low BAC in fed rats evidently are a result of the absorption of ethanol by solid food particles present in the stomach.
