In this paper we shall investigate the syntax of auxiliary verbs in Sardinian from two principal points of view. In the first part of the paper we shall attempt to devise criteria for distinguishing auxiliary verbs from other verbs which take a non-finite complement and, at the same time, to identify the class of verbs which qualify as auxiliaries in Sardinian according to these criteria. In the second part of the paper we shall discuss the type of constituent structure which might be appropriate for auxiliary verb constructions in Sardinian, particularly in the light of analyses which have been advocated for other Romance languages.
