Many covalently bonded molecules have sufficient geometric stability so that they can exhibit stable chirality. When substances are not racemic mixtures, it has long been known that a consequence of chirality is their optical rotatory power and the associated phenomenon of circular dichroism. Some years ago Farago1 argued, on the basis of symmetry, that longitudinally polarized electrons should show different scattering amplitudes for right- or left-handed chiral molecules.
