The size of a group can influence the risk and competitive environment for its members, as well as affect the social dynamic among members. As group size increases, individual predation risk may decrease through mechanisms such as risk dilution, earlier predator detection and predator confusion (Krause & Ruxton 2002). Fish are able to make accurate assessments of their risk of predation and to trade risk in an adaptive way (Kelly 2008). As group size increases, fish may hence be expected to allocate more time to potentially risky fitness-increasing behaviour, such as foraging.
