Counterfactual reasoning in history evokes the development of alternate narratives contradicting standard concepts of cultural knowledge. This article puts forth a knowledge oriented model of the reader’s cognition concerning fictional narrative texts creating an alternative course of history within their story worlds. The article illustrates the process of ›sense-making‹ by using the terms ›Wende‹ and ›Wenderoman‹ as examples. On the theoretical grounds of frame-semantics and the theory of ›blending‹ established by Fauconnier and Turner it is shown how background knowledge and alternative information gained by the process of reading result in the formation of a ›blend‹.
