In view of the fact that malonic acid is the major organic acid in bush bean roots and in view of the apparent absence or low activity of acetyl CoA carboxylase in these tissues, the present study was undertaken to investigate further the biosynthesis of malonic acid in bush bean roots. A soluble enzyme preparation was isolated and shown to convert oxaloacetate to malonate. Mn was the only supplemental cofactor required. Carbons 3 and 4 of oxaloacetate were equally incorporated into the C skeleton of malonate, thus indicating that oxaloacetate undergoes an a -decarboxylation to yield malonate. || ABSTRACT AUTHORS: Authors
