In evaluating the results of measurements of the viscoelastic behaviour of liquids and polymers derived from cyclic shearing stress we usually employ reduced variables in which a change of temperature—and hence of the viscosity of the liquid—is regarded as being equivalent to a change in the frequency of the exciting shear wave (Ferry 1961). In practice, it is desirable to obtain experimental results covering the whole of the relaxation region so that the relaxation spectrum can be derived unambiguously. Available experimental techniques operating at fre quencies above lMc/s are restricted in their application to liquids which have steady-flow viscosities exceeding about 1P (Barlow, Harrison, Richter, Seguin & Lamb 1961). For liquids of relatively simple molecular structure, interest therefore centres on those which can be investigated in the supercooled state but very few results for the viscous behaviour of such liquids have been reported. t Present address: Department of Chemistry, The University of Essex, Colchester, Essex.
