The halogen effect was applied to improve the oxidation resistance of Ni-based superalloys with low aluminum content. By increasing the Al-activity on the metal surface the formation of a dense protective alumina scale becomes possible. Thermodynamic calculations show the existence of a positive fluorine effect for the alloy IN738 for temperatures between 900 C and 1200 C. Ion implantation was applied for the screening of the corresponding fluorine concentrations. The oxidation mechanism changed from an inward-growing discontinuous scale to a dense, protective outer alumina layer. The optimum implantation parameters were identified.
