In this contribution I construct a definition of the term'religions', as a designator of the domain of study of the empirical sciences of religions. The first section deals with some methodological issues, running from the question whether'religion'can be defined at all, to a short summary of the available tools to do so. In the second section, a short lexical definition is given, paying special attention to unusual definitions, as well as some phenomena which cause problems for the usual ones. In the last section I then build up my stipulative definition, which I precede with a statement concerning my personal position towards this issue.
