METHODSThe study sample consisted of 2 Mohawk children (14 boys and 6 girls) and their parents recruited from the St Regis Mohawk reservation in Hogansburg, NY. The children ranged in age from 1.5 to 4 years. A study coordinator was hired from the Akwesasne community and families were recruited from local daycare programs, parent groups, and St Regis Mohawk Health Services. Because portable measuring devices were not available, parents reported the children's heights and weights. Energy and nutrient intakes were assessed by parents' completion of 3-day food records (encompassing 2 weekdays and 1 weekend day) for their children. Parents were instructed in properrecord-keeping techniques, and all food diaries were reviewed for accuracy and completeness by project staff. The food records were coded using Nutritionist IV (version 4.1, FirstDataBank, San Bruno, Calif, 1997) and analyzed for total energy; fat, protein, and carbohydrate in grams; and percentage of energy from fat, protein, and carbohydrate.
