Materials and MethodsThe technic for determining wound ten-sile strength has been described.* An ex-cised segment of a midline laparotomy wound is suspended between two intestinal clamps and a constantly increasing weight is applied. Wound tensile strength is determined by measuring the weight required to disrupt the wound. Wounding was altered between groups in an effort to keep tlıe tcchnic as standard as possible." Blood volume was measured by the indicator dilution method using donor red blood cells tagged with a radioactive iso-tope of chromium. Approximately 0.15 cc. of tagged red cells was used to produce as little volume change as possible. After a l2-to 16-minute mixing period tlıe animal was exsanguinated to collect a sufficient volume to count duplicate samples. Microlhematocrits were done in triplicate and serum protcin concentration was done in duplicate by the biuret method. Serum albumin was not determined separately since starch gel electrophoresis is necessary to separate the serum protein fractions of ruts.
