Squire and Stierl explore forms of displacement that manifest in the context of migrant journeys at sea. The chapter provides an overview of literatures that examine the legal and policy context for maritime displacement, as well as those that explore how maritime security, border enforcement, and military–humanitarian practices produce precariousness. Drawing attention to the ways that recent scholarship emphasises both the symbolic and the material dimensions of maritime displacement, as well as its gendered and racialised nature, the chapter highlights the importance of examining maritime displacement in relation to contemporary practices of governing mobility. It also problematises the binary between forced and voluntary displacement along with the binary of smuggling and trafficking, while emphasising the significance of ongoing movements that contest the production of precariousness at sea.
