IN LIGHT OF RUSSIA’S INVASION OF UKRAINE THIS YEAR, POLITICAL and academic commentators are reflecting on the role Russian sports mega-events—including the 2014 Olympics and the 2018 Football World Cup—might have played in this geopolitical and human crisis. Though lacking the benefit of hindsight, this 2021 edited volume is the first major collection of post-tournament academic reflections on the political significance of the FIFA 2018 World Cup. Despite the proliferation of scholarship across disciplines both before and during the championship, huge gaps remain in our understanding of what this project ultimately meant for the Kremlin, Russians and the wider world. This volume helps to fill this void. The editor, Richard Arnold, has divided the volume into two admittedly unequal parts: the first seven chapters primarily focus on the domain of domestic politics, while the final three contributions reflect on the international implications of the 2018 championship. A strength of the volume is the heterogeneity of the topics explored and the diversity of the approaches used by contributing scholars with a wide range of disciplinary expertise. The authors examine the sporting legacy of the event (Chapter 1) and analyse the championship as a domestic ‘security laboratory’(Chapter 2) and as a site of regional populist politics (Chapter 3).
