WE READ WITH GREAT INTEREST THE ARTICLE BY SHIMMYO and associates (Am J Ophthalmol 2003; 136: 603—613) on the racial differences and correlations of intraocular pressure, Goldmann applanation tonometry, and corneal dimensions. We would like to extend our congratulations to all the authors. We agreed that corneal dimensions affect tonometry reading, thus the screening, the diagnosis, and the management of glaucoma. However, there are few issues related to the study that may warrant further discussion.Being an international city, the impact of differences in ethnicity can never be addressed enough in Hong Kong. However, with 94.9% of our population being Chinese, refractive error and its effect on the corneal dimensions are of greater clinical significance to our locality. It is known that Chinese residing in urbanized areas have a 1.5 to 2.5 higher prevalence of myopia than the Caucasians. 1 And corneas were found to be thinner and flatter in myopia progression. 2 We would like to ask the authors’ opinion on the weight of refractive error in their study, especially because their sample population consists of patients undergoing refractive surgery.
