The inheritance of flowering time was studied in the short-day soybean,Glycine max(L.) Merr., under long-day conditions in the greenhouse using natural day length extended to 20 hours with cool-white fluorescent light. A single, major gene with two alleles was found to control the flowering response. The dominant allele which gave a fluorescent-sensitive response of delayed flowering also resulted in later field maturity whereas the recessive allele which gave an insensitive response resulted in earlier maturity. The maturity symbolsE3ande3are proposed for these alleles. Isolines have been developed.
