In 100 cases of long continued, low grade fever of unknown origin, women were affected 3 times as often as men, most often between 20-40 yrs. Neurotic signs were evident in at least 25, and treatment was less successful with them; 35 had focal infections but removal of foci did not materially affect the no. of recoveries. Of the 55 who recovered the av. duration of fever was 28 mos. The cause is not yet known. It may be: neurogenous; a focal or general infection; a metabolic derangement; a failure of heat regulation common to a group of diverse minor functional or organic derangements; or it may be a disease, sui generis.
