rapid emergence of professional funeral companies is of interest: a development shown to emerge from issues of lack of time among busy townsfolk, time that is, also, marked in formal time off work allowed by some government agencies for different categories of kin, for example, 7 days for a parent or spouse and 5 days for a child. Significant issues of burial over cremation are also detailed including the best use and cost of land for poorer people, government policies favoring cremation, and cremation for ‘‘bad’’ deaths. The nature of change, time, and space runs through the book and ties in, latterly, with a comparison of tomb spaces over places for storing cremated remains. This review touches only the surface of an important volume for death studies in that it shows the complex interplay of social change, families, money, ancestorsspirits, government policy, and individual decisions surrounding death and ongoing human relationships.
