Olav Mueller-Reichau: Scripts and the Interpretation of the General-Factual Reading of Russian ImperfectivesThe presence of a script in background knowledge is known to support the general-factual reading of a Russian imperfective. The paper offers an explanation as to why this is so: As a product of aspectual competition, to avoid target state relevance, general-factuals highlight the kind of the event denoted by the verb. Moreover, for a general-factual to be successfully uttered, the event kind has to identify the antecedent of a rule in background knowledge, which serves to supply a consequence to fill the deserted relevance slot. Scripts provide suitable contexts for general-factuals precisely because they provide rules.
