An analytical 3‐D model is developed to estimate steady state plume lengths in contaminated aquifers for the case of an instantaneous bimolecular reaction. The developed model generalizes the previous vertically‐oriented 2‐D model of Liedl et al. (2005) by considering a source that has finite width (2W) and is extended over the entire depth (M) of the aquifer. It is shown that the model of Liedl et al. (2005) overestimates steady state plume lengths if the source width is below a certain maximum relevant source width (2Wrel). Results also suggest that the ratio of the bulk transverse dispersivities in the horizontal and vertical directions is critical in defining the size of the plume, and that the maximum plume length is observed when 2W and M are approximately equal for any ratio above 10.
