S. radicale was found in the root hairs of a number of different species of grass growing in 2 localities in the south of England. The root hairs are infected by a small swarm spore, which, after entry, develops into an amoeba containing many nuclei. As a result of parasitism, the root hairs swell considerably, but no other hypertrophy is caused. The amoeba develops into a mass of spores which are arranged in a hollow sphere; all the spores are cemented together by a common membrane. The new species differs from the only other described species, S. veronicae, in the host parasitized and in the degree of hypertrophy produced. Its spores are also much smaller than those of S. veronicae. This new fungus does no appreciable damage to the grass plants which it attacks.
